Nicolas Foliot was a famous French chairmaker of the 18th century. He supplied furniture to the royal palaces of Versailles, Trianon, Fontainebleau and Compiegne during the reign of Louis XV (1715-1774) As a result, he earned the title of menuisier du Garde-Meuble du Roi (Furniture-Maker to the King’s Household). The Musée du Louvre, the Chateau de Versailles, the Metropolitan Museum of Art or likewise the State Hermitage Museum keep today several of his pieces of furniture.
Curved forms, lightness, comfort and also asymmetry characterized the furniture of the Louis XV period. It replaced the more formal and massive furniture of the Louis XIV style. Louis XV furniture was not designed for the vast palace state rooms of the Versailles of Louis XIV. It was however created for the smaller, more intimate salons created by Louis XV and by his mistresses, Marquise de Pompadour and Comtesse du Barry.
