The French Empire style, developed during Napoleon Bonaparte’s reign, was a grand and neoclassical style meant to convey power and prestige. Influenced by ancient Roman and Egyptian motifs, it featured bold, symmetrical designs and rich materials. The Empire style achieved great popularity. It was therefore adopted in courts throughout Europe, especially in Russia.

Inspired by the French Empire style, Russian Empire furniture adapted these designs with local influences, emphasizing opulence and craftsmanship. Both styles emphasized grandeur and were used to project state power, but Russian Empire furniture had a more decorative and opulent touch, reflecting Russia’s cultural and artistic traditions.

In Germany and Austria, it coexisted with the Biedermeier style associated with modest domestic interiors. In England it was known as the Regency style.
