Born in 1885, Samuel Marx was an American architect, furniture designer and interior decorator. He is generally considered a modernist, influenced by the International style.
Marx studied architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). He sailed for Europe two weeks after graduating and spent eighteen months traveling and studying at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He later established himself in Chicago, where he created homes heavily influenced by Mies van der Rohe.
Marx’s furniture designs are celebrated for their refined craftsmanship and use of luxurious materials such as rare woods, parchment, and metals. His creations often featured clean, geometric lines infused with an Art Deco sensibility, balancing functionality with artistic beauty..
His furniture was often custom-made to suit specific interiors, emphasizing harmony and cohesiveness. Today, his designs remain highly coveted by collectors and design enthusiasts, admired for their sophisticated simplicity and enduring appeal.
