Buddhist monks first created Negoro lacquerware at the Negoro-ji temple during Japan’s medieval period. This Zen complex, located in Izumi province, just south of present-day Osaka, became renowned for its distinctive lacquer craftsmanship. Negoro lacquerware features a black lacquer base covered with layers of red lacquer. Over time, regular use naturally wears down the red surface, gradually exposing the black underneath and forming unique, organic patterns with striking contrasts.

While traditional Negoro wares aged through everyday handling, modern artisans now recreate this effect with precision. Instead of relying on natural wear, they carefully polish the red lacquer by hand to reveal the black layers beneath, ensuring a beautifully aged appearance from the start. This refined process preserves the essence of Negoro lacquerware while adapting it to contemporary craftsmanship.
