Born in 1902, Arne Jacobsen was a Danish furniture designer and architect. As a student, he was influenced by Swiss architect Le Corbusier and German architects Walter Gropius and Mies van der Rohe. In 1929, in collaboration with Flemming Lassen, he won a Danish Architect’s Association competition for designing the “House of the Future”. It therefore brings him immediate recognition and he founded his own firm in 1930. He gradually gained international renown, winning prestigious commissions such as the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen and St Catherine’s School in Oxford. Arne Jacobsen designed buildings as well as furniture, textiles and objects in ceramics and steel. He created iconic furniture pieces among them the Egg chair and the Swan chair for example.
