CHIPPENDALE STYLE CHINESE BED

The Chippendale-style Chinese bed takes direct inspiration from the Badminton Bed at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Crafted with a plywood and solid wood frame, it features a somptuous lacquered decor and gold leaf finishings.

After admiring the Badminton Bed at the V&A, our team set out to create a truly unique piece of furniture. We brought together the finest artisans, each renowned for exceptional craftsmanship. Our cabinetmaker meticulously hand-carved every sculpture, shaping intricate details from the ornate roof to the back panels. To ensure a flawless finish, we collaborated with a Parisian atelier specializing in antique Asian lacquer restoration to paint the entire bed structure. For the final touch, we selected a luxurious fabric from the Manufacture Royale Bonvallet, enhancing the bed’s refined and exquisite atmosphere. While inspired by an 18th-century model, this bed seamlessly blends historical elegance with modern comfort.

Thomas Chippendale, an English cabinetmaker, revolutionized furniture design during the third quarter of the 18th century. He developed three distinct styles: Gothic, Rococo, and Chinese. The Chinese Chippendale style stands out with china cabinets featuring fretwork-designed glazing bars and pagoda-style pediments. Craftsmen often designed these pieces for chinoiserie-decorated rooms, finishing them with oriental-style lacquer through a process known as japanning.
