ITALIAN DESIGN
Italian design legacy stems from its rich cultural and artistic history. Architect Luigi Caccia Dominioni famously said, “Quite simply, we are the best. We have more imagination, more culture, and are better mediators between the past and the future.” This statement captures Italy’s lasting impact on urban design, industrial design, interior design, and moreover fashion worldwide.
After the fall of Fascism and the birth of the Republic, the 1946 RIMA exhibition revealed Italy’s flourishing talent in interior decorating. During the Italian economic miracle, industrial production boomed, and mass-produced furniture became widely popular. This period ignited a creative revolution. Italy’s complex and often contradictory cultural heritage fueled the work of its most talented designers. Notable Italian furniture makers included Gio Ponti, Ettore Sottsass, Carlo Mollino, Achille Castiglioni, Gaetano Pesce, Gae Aulenti. Some of them also designed entire interiors for their wealthy clients.
